Eric Luper, an author of books for children, was at the NYS Reading Association Conference on November 10, 2015. The conference was held in Saratoga, New York.

Luper has written 20 books that have been or will be published soon. He said that his favorite book is always the one that is about to be submitted because he’s always excited about what people will think of it. His favorite book by another author is Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

When he tried to get his first book published he submitted it 100 times before he finally gave up on it. The first time one of his books came out he felt super excited, it was like an adventure. Luper usually writes fiction for all ages, usually kids –but no picture books. He likes to write what he would’ve liked to read when he was a kid.

His books usually come from “what if” questions, like “What if a kid’s parents died?” or something like that. He always does research when writing a book because he doesn’t want to get a ton of people saying that something isn’t correct.

According to Luper the hardest thing about being a writer is to discipline yourself to write every day. The best thing about being a writer is you can control the story; you can make it go where you want it to go. If you want to become a writer the main thing to do is: write.
