These are the most important words in all of “The Book of Boy.” This 273 page book by Catherine Gilbert Murdock is simply fantastic, although, it is not simple.

A young child named Boy can talk to animals. He is a hunchback. When his beloved lady died, along with Father Petrus and when Sir Jacques was  punctured with a piece of metal, (but survived) Boy was treated miserably. He was a goatherd. He slept in a goatshed on piles of hay. At least he had a home.

Secondus was a sinner. He knew he was. He was going to go to Hell. He wanted to change that. He decided to find all seven relics of Saint Peter, bits of the saint’s body. He did it by stealing.

Secondus found Boy at the manor Boy lives in. Secondus made Boy travel with him to Saint Peter’s Step, and then a farther journey to Rome.

Boy embarks on a hair raising adventure with Secondus, and finds out amazing facts about the past and himself.

Is he really a monster? To find out, read “The Book of Boy”!

I would recommend this book to 5th and 6th graders. It involves lots of religious Christian beliefs.

I would also keep a set of sticky notes in the front of the book, because it is written in an old fashioned way. I got confused with words like “vats” and “padlock.” Due to the phrasing, I took a guess that “naught” means “nothing.”

This book is spectacular. The first chapters were a bit slow, but as I kept reading, I liked it more and more.
